How the SAT is scored
The digital SAT has two sections. Each is scored on its own 200–800 scale, and the total is the two added together. Inside a section, every question counts once, a wrong answer costs nothing more than a blank, and the raw count of correct answers is converted to the scaled score through a table built for that test form.
The table is not linear. Through the middle of the scale one more correct Math answer is worth about ten points; at the bottom the first handful are worth nearer twenty each, and at the top the curve flattens enough that a single missed Math question still rounds to 800. That shape — steep at the ends, flat in the middle — is what the calculator above reproduces, and it is why two students a few questions apart can land on the same score.

SAT scoring questions, answered
How is the SAT scored?
Each of the two sections — Reading and Writing, and Math — is scored from 200 to 800, and the total score is their sum, 400 to 1600. Within a section, the number of questions you answer correctly (the raw score) is converted to the 200–800 scale through a conversion table that the College Board builds for each test form. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank and a wrong answer count the same.
Is this calculator accurate?
It is an estimate, and the site labels it as one everywhere it appears. The real conversion table is different for every test form, because the College Board equates each form statistically so that a raw score means the same thing across administrations. This calculator uses a published College Board conversion table re-expressed as a percentage of the section, which keeps the curve's real shape — flat in the middle, steep at the ends — while adapting to this site's section lengths. Expect the real score to land within about 30 points per section.
Why does the calculator ask for two Reading and Writing numbers?
Because the section is two modules of 27 questions, and the practice tests on this site tally them separately before combining them into the one 200–800 Reading and Writing score. Entering the two modules matches what a scored practice test reports; if you only know the combined number, split it evenly.
How does the adaptive second module affect my score?
On the real digital SAT, your result on the first module of a section decides whether the second module is the easier or the harder version, and the harder version is the only route to the top of the scale. This calculator does not model that routing — it converts your total correct in the section as if every question were on one form — so a strong first module is worth slightly more than the number here suggests, and a weak one slightly less.
What is a good SAT score?
About 1050 is the middle of all test takers; 1200 is comfortably above average; 1400 and up is competitive at selective universities. Use the calculator the other way round: pick a target total, then see how many questions per section that needs. A 1300, for example, is 21 of 27 in each Reading and Writing module and 34 of 44 in Math on this curve.
How do I get my raw score without taking the real test?
Take a full-length practice test. SAT Practice Test 1 on this site is free, timed the same way as the real test — 32 + 32 minutes for Reading and Writing, 35 + 35 for Math — and reports the raw tally per section, the estimated scaled score from this same curve, and accuracy by topic so you know what to fix.
