About the SAT: How the Math Section Works

Before the first equation: how the digital SAT is built, what the Math section actually tests and in what proportions, how adaptive modules and scoring work, what the calculator and reference sheet give you, how student-produced responses must be typed, and how to use this course.

Introduction

The SAT is a two-hour-and-fourteen-minute digital test taken in an app called Bluebook, on your own laptop or a school device. It has two sections: Reading and Writing, then Math. This course is about the Math section, but the first thing to understand is that the Math section is not a random pile of problems. It is built to a published blueprint: four content domains in fixed proportions, two modules of fixed length, a fixed time per module, and a fixed set of question formats. A student who knows the blueprint studies the right things and paces correctly on test day; a student who does not spends hours on topics that are worth two questions and runs out of time on topics worth fifteen.

The second thing to understand is that the test adapts. Your first Math module decides how hard your second one is, and the harder second module is the only route to the top scores. That single fact changes how you should treat the first module: it is not a warm-up, it is the gate.

This lesson lays out the structure, the domains and their weights, the question formats (including exactly how to type an answer when there are no choices), the tools you get, how the score is produced, and finally how the rest of this course is arranged so you can climb from Foundations to Advanced in each domain.

How to attack these questions on test day.

    Treat Module 1 as the gate, not the warm-up

    The digital SAT is multistage adaptive: everyone gets the same first Math module, and your performance on it routes you to either a harder or an easier second module. The harder module is where the highest scaled scores live. So your goal in Module 1 is accuracy above everything: answer the questions you know cold, check them, and do not burn ten minutes on one hard question. A careless miss in Module 1 costs more than the same miss in Module 2.

    Budget about 95 seconds a question, then move

    Each Math module gives you 35 minutes for 22 questions, which is roughly 95 seconds each. Questions inside a module run from easier to harder, so the early ones should take well under a minute, banking time for the last few. If a question passes two minutes with no clear path, flag it in Bluebook, pick your best guess, and come back if time remains. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.

    Use the built-in calculator like a tool, not a crutch

    A calculator is allowed on the entire Math section, and Bluebook includes a full Desmos graphing calculator. Graphing both sides of an equation and reading the intersection, or graphing a quadratic to see its vertex and zeros, is often faster than algebra and is a legitimate strategy. But typing an expression into a calculator is not the same as understanding it: many questions ask for an expression, an interpretation, or a relationship between constants, and no calculator answers those.

    Know the reference sheet so you never memorize what is given

    Every Math question has a reference button that opens a sheet of geometry formulas: area and circumference of a circle, area of a rectangle and a triangle, the Pythagorean theorem, the two special right triangles, volumes of a box, cylinder, sphere, cone and pyramid, and the facts that a circle has 360 degrees, an arc of a circle has 2 π radians, and a triangle's angles sum to 180 degrees. Anything not on that sheet, such as the quadratic formula, the slope formula and every exponent rule, you must know.

    Type student-produced responses exactly the way the test wants

    About a quarter of the Math questions have no answer choices: you type the answer. Positive answers may be up to five characters, negative answers up to six including the minus sign. Fractions are typed with a slash, decimals with a point, and a mixed number like 3 1/2 must be entered as 7/2 or 3.5, never as 31/2. If a decimal does not fit, either round or truncate to fill the space (0.6666 or 0.6667 for two thirds, but not 0.66). If a question has more than one correct answer, any one of them earns the point.

Theory

The digital SAT has two sections, each split into two modules, and every module has its own clock. Reading and Writing comes first: two modules of 27 questions in 32 minutes each. Math follows: two modules of 22 questions in 35 minutes each, so 44 Math questions in 70 minutes. Two questions in each Math module are unscored pretest items that the College Board is trialing; you cannot tell which they are, so treat every question as if it counts. There is a ten-minute break between the two sections.

The Math section is multistage adaptive at the module level. Every student gets a first module of mixed difficulty. Bluebook scores it as you finish, and the second module you receive is either the harder or the easier of two prepared modules. Within a module, questions are arranged from roughly easiest to hardest, and the four content domains are mixed together rather than grouped. Your scaled score, from 200 to 800, is computed from which questions you answered correctly and how hard they were, not from a simple count, which is why the harder second module matters: it offers questions worth more toward the top of the scale. The two section scores add to a total from 400 to 1600. Wrong answers are not penalized, so guessing is always better than leaving a blank.

The College Board publishes the content blueprint. Algebra is thirteen to fifteen questions, about 35 percent: linear equations in one and two variables, linear functions, systems of two linear equations, and linear inequalities. Advanced Math is also thirteen to fifteen questions, about 35 percent: equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations in one variable and systems in two variables, and nonlinear functions, which in practice means quadratics, exponentials, polynomials, radicals and rational expressions. Problem Solving and Data Analysis is five to seven questions, about 15 percent: ratios, rates, proportions and units, percentages, one-variable data such as measures of center and spread, two-variable data such as scatterplots and models, probability, sample statistics and margin of error, and evaluating statistical claims. Geometry and Trigonometry is five to seven questions, about 15 percent: area and volume, lines, angles and triangles, right triangles and trigonometry, and circles. Roughly 70 percent of your score, then, comes from Algebra and Advanced Math together, which is why this course gives those domains the same three tiers as the others but expects you to spend the most time there.

About 75 percent of Math questions are multiple choice with four options, A through D, exactly one of which is correct. The remaining 25 percent are student-produced responses, where you type a number. Roughly a third of all questions are set in a real-world context: a word problem, a data table, or a graph. Context questions are not harder mathematics; they are the same mathematics with an extra translation step, and most of the practice in this course is written in context for that reason.

Bluebook gives you several tools. The Desmos graphing calculator is available on every Math question. A reference sheet of geometry formulas is one click away. You can flag any question to return to it, cross out answer choices you have eliminated, and see a countdown timer that you may hide. Annotation is available in Reading and Writing but not on Math. You may also bring your own approved calculator.

Student-produced responses have strict entry rules. You may type digits, a decimal point, a slash for a fraction, and a leading minus sign. Positive answers hold at most five characters and negative answers at most six. A mixed number cannot be entered: 2 1/4 must become 9/4 or 2.25. A repeating or long decimal must fill the box, so 5/6 can be entered as 5/6, .8333, 0.833, or .8334, but .83 would be marked wrong. Percent signs, dollar signs, units, and variables cannot be entered; if a question asks for a percentage, type the number alone. If more than one value is correct, entering any one of them scores the point.

This course is arranged so that structure works for you. It starts with this orientation. Then each of the four domains is taught three times: Foundations covers the definitions, formulas and first moves every question assumes; Medium covers the multi-step questions that fill the middle of both modules; Advanced covers the parameter questions, the proof-style reasoning and the traps that separate the top scores. Every lesson ends with practice questions, every domain has matching untimed drills in the question bank, and the full-length practice exams reproduce the two-module timing so your pacing gets tested, not just your algebra.

The College Board's published blueprint. Algebra and Advanced Math together are about 70 percent of the questions, so they carry about 70 percent of the points available to you.

Typing a student-produced response

The answer box accepts digits, a decimal point, a slash and a leading minus sign, and nothing else. When a decimal will not fit, fill every space by rounding or truncating.

Worked examples

Try each one before opening the solution.

Example 1: Set a pacing budget for a Math module

A Math module has 22 questions and 35 minutes. A student wants to finish with 3 minutes left to revisit flagged questions. About how many seconds can she spend per question, and how many minutes should she have used by the time she reaches question 11?

  1. Convert the working time to seconds after reserving the review buffer: 35 - 3 = 32 minutes, and 32 x 60 = 1920 seconds.

    Reserve the buffer first; a plan that uses all 35 minutes has no room for a second look at anything.

  2. Divide by the number of questions: 1920 / 22 is about 87 seconds per question.
  3. Find the halfway checkpoint: 11 questions x 87 seconds is about 957 seconds, roughly 16 minutes.

    Because questions get harder through the module, being slightly ahead of this checkpoint is the goal, not exactly on it.

  4. State the plan: about 87 seconds a question, at question 11 with about 19 minutes still showing on the clock, and 3 minutes at the end for flagged items.

Answer: About 87 seconds per question; after question 11 roughly 16 minutes used, so about 19 minutes should remain on the module clock.

Example 2: Enter a student-produced response correctly

A question's answer works out to 5 and 1/3. Which entries would be scored correct: 5 1/3, 16/3, 5.333, 5.33, 5.3333?

  1. Rule out the mixed number: 5 1/3 would be read as 51/3, which is 17, so it is wrong.

    Mixed numbers can never be typed; convert to an improper fraction or a decimal.

  2. Check the improper fraction: 5 x 3 + 1 = 16, so 16/3 is exact and uses four characters. Correct.
  3. Check the decimals against the five-character limit: 5.333 uses five characters and fills the box. Correct. 5.3333 is six characters and will not fit; the box would cut it to 5.333, which is still fine.
  4. Check 5.33: only four characters, so the box was not filled and the value is not accurate enough. Marked wrong.

    The rule is fill the box, not "two decimal places". Rounding to 5.33 loses points that 5.333 keeps.

Answer: 16/3, 5.333 and (as entered) 5.3333 are scored correct; 5 1/3 and 5.33 are marked wrong.

Common mistakes

Treating Module 1 as a warm-up. It routes you, so careless errors there cost more than anywhere else on the test.

Studying by topic count instead of by weight. Circles and trigonometry feel hard and attract study hours, but Geometry and Trigonometry is about six questions; a weak spot in linear or quadratic equations costs far more.

Leaving a student-produced response blank because you are unsure. A blank and a wrong answer score identically. Type your best value.

Entering mixed numbers, percent signs, or short decimals in the answer box. Convert to an improper fraction or decimal, drop the symbol, and fill the box.

Assuming the calculator will save a question. It graphs and computes; it does not read a word problem, choose an equation, or interpret a constant.

Forgetting that Reading and Writing comes first. Arrive knowing you will do 64 minutes of reading before your first equation, and plan your energy for that.
